Molloy is Samuel Beckett's best-known novel, and his first published work to be written in French, ushering in a period of concentrated creativity in the late 1940s which included the companion novels Malone Dies and The Unnamable . The narrative of Molloy, old and ill, remembering and forgetting, scarcely human, begets a parallel tale of the spinsterish Moran, a private detective sent in search of him, whose own deterioration during the quest joins in with the catalogue of Molloy's woes. Molloy brings a world into existence with finicking certainties, at the tip of whoever is holding the pencil, and trades larger uncertainties with the reader. Fils d'une famille protestante aisée, Samuel Beckett passe sa jeunesse à Dublin. Mais c'est à Paris, où il rencontre James Joyce et des artistes d'avant-garde, qu'il vit surtout. Après la mort de son père, il écrit son premier texte, 'Murphy'. Pendant la guerre, il s'engage dans la Résistance et rejoint le Vaucluse où il écrit son deuxième roman, 'Watt', et invente la figure du 'clochard' que l'on retrouve constamment. Il retourne ensuite à Paris où il écrit des romans, 'Premier amour', 'Molloy'... et des pièces de théâtre, 'Eleuthéria'... C'est en 1953, lors d'une représentation de sa pièce 'En attendant Godot', qu'il acquiert sa renommé mondiale, consacrée par le prix Nobel en 1969. Samuel Beckett consacre la suite de sa carrière à des textes courts, à la traduction de ses textes et à la mise en scène de ses pièces. S'il écrit en français, c'est pour limiter l'usage de la langue. Son oeuvre, austère comme un monologue intérieur, exprime l'impossibilité de vivre en sachant la finitude de l'existence.
