On September 13th 2022, a young Iranian student, Mahsa Amini, was arrested by the religious police in Tehran. Her only crime was that she wasn't properly wearing the headscarf required for women by the Islamic Republic. At the police station, she was beaten so badly she had to be taken to the hospital, where she fell into a deep coma. She died three days later. The plight of this 22-year-old woman raised a wave of protests that soon spread through the whole country, and crowds adopted the slogan "Woman, Life, Freedom." Around the world, these words have been chanted during solidarity rallies.

Depuis la publication de Femme Vie Liberté en septembre 2023, Marjane Satrapi a réalisé son film Paradis Paris, a été lauréate du prix Princesse des Asturies en sciences humaines en Espagne et a été élue à la section cinéma et audiovisuel de l'Académie des beaux-arts. Tous les jours, elle continue son combat pour l'Iran. Elle a refusé la Légion d'honneur début 2025 pour s'opposer à ce qu'elle perçoit comme une " attitude hypocrite de la France vis-à-vis de l'Iran ", notamment en ce qui concerne l'attribution de visas à des enfants d'" oligarques iraniens " plutôt qu'aux "jeunes Iraniens épris de liberté, dissidents, et artistes ".
