The Guide to 3D Modeling provides a systematic and structured approach to 3D modeling that focuses on the visual representation of the solid. The strategy adopted for presenting these concepts is simple and effective: one page, one topic.
This way, the reader has access at a glance to an overview of all the information on a given topic. The Guide contains the basic principles of part modeling, the steps for achieving fully constrained sketches, the 3D signature of the various base solids from which to start a model, the transformation and dress-up of an existing solid, and an introduction to parts assembly. The final chapter discusses the production of design and working drawings by projection of a 3D model.
Lastly, in appendix, the reader will find the list of steps to follow when modeling a part and an overview of the degrees of freedom associated with a coincidence constraint.
Instead of referring to a specific software program, the Guide presents the reasoning and principles common to multiple modeling programs, such as SolidWorks and CATIA V5 (Dassault Systèmes), Inventor (Autodesk), Solid Edge and NX (Siemens), and open-source software such as FreeCAD.
The Guide to 3D Modeling is primarily intended for undergraduate engineering students and for students in related fields at the college level and in professional training. It is also an excellent reference for practitioners working in the industry after graduation.
Reactor physics is the discipline devoted to the study of interactions between neutrons and matt er in a nuclear reactor. In Applied Reactor Physics, reactor physics is approached from the fundamental level. Legacy numerical techniques are introduced with suffi cient details to permit their implementati on in Matlab. More advanced and/or proprietary techniques may be available in a producti on environment, but these can be obtained as evoluti ons of the fundamental approaches presented in the book.
A characteristic of Applied Reactor Physics is to emphasize the algorithmic nature of numerical solution techniques used in reactor physics. Many numerical soluti on approaches described in the book are accompanied by Matlab scripts and readers are encouraged to write short Matlab scripts of their own in order to solve the Endof-Chapter exercises.
In their struggle for economic and social progress, most developing countries strive to attract foreign investments, in particular international aid funds. The positive outcome of these efforts depends on a wide array of factors including the aid recipient country's preparedness in terms of having high quality pre-investment studies available as well as professionals who are experienced in leading or participating in full-fl edged investment project appraisals.
The purpose of International Development Project Appraisal, Execution Planning and Monitoring is to provide the reader with an overview of the various analytical efforts involved in preparing and appraising a development project funded in cooperation with international donors. It puts emphasis on explaining the key concepts in a simple fashion and on showing the interrelationships between the various facets of project preparation and appraisal. Professionals and students with an interest in development work will fi nd it a handy reference, regardless of their areas of expertise or academic background.
Joseph Martial Ribeiro has a background in civil engineering and holds a Ph.D. in hydrology. He has acquired extensive experience in the area of pre-investment studies for international development projects, as well as project preparation and appraisal, in particular on the African continent. His professional activities have led him to interact with a variety of stakeholders and professionals from diverse social and academic backgrounds, which has greatly enriched his perspective. He is currently a manager at the African Development Bank.
In order to reduce the seismic risk facing many densely populated regions worldwide, including Canada and the United States, modern earthquake engineering should be more widely applied. But current literature on earthquake engineering may be difficult to grasp for structural engineers who are untrained in seismic design. In addition no single resource addressed seismic design practices in both Canada and the United States until now. Elements of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics was written to fill the gap. It presents the key elements of earthquake engineering and structural dynamics at an introductory level and gives readers the basic knowledge they need to apply the seismic provisions contained in Canadian and American building codes. But the scope of this book is not limited to structural analysis and design; it also discusses the basics of other relevant topics such as seismology, seismic risk analysis and geotechnical engineering, to help structural engineers work efficiently with other specialists on earthquake-resistant construction projects. Chapters end with a set of problems giving readers an insight into practical aspects of the subject.
TARGET AUDIENCE This book is intended for senior undergraduate and graduate structural engineering students, and university educators as well as practicing engineers who will all find it a valuable resource.
A theft and a hold-up, an impostor trying to collect an inheritance, the disappearance of a lab mouse worth several hundred thousand dollars, and a number of other cases : these are the investigations led by Maurice Manori, a police inspector known for being quick on the draw. He owes his reputation to his highly effective (but very unconventional ) methods. His secret weapon ? Graph theory. In search of the truth, Inspector Manori draws graphs that will introduce you to the ins and outs of a mathematical discipline with countless handy applications.
This novel provides the layperson with an excellent breakdown of a science that's not very well known, using it to model a wide range of everyday situations. Thanks to its fun approach, it's great for both Sudoku and logic puzzle lovers and for math and science students and teachers.
Bad guys take note : Manori is watching, and he's quick on the draw !

Asymmetric operation involves operating power transmission corridors at full capacity from a few milliseconds to a few hours even though individual three-phase lines have been weakened due to fault conditions. This book describes how asymmetric operation is implemented, how much it costs and how it can improve the reliability, economics and flexibility of electric power transmission systems. Numerous examples of asymmetric operation are provided at all major HV, EHV and UHV voltages demonstrating the very real benefits of asymmetric operation.
First, the underlying concepts of symmetric three-phase transmission system planning and operation are introduced. Then, asymmetric operation is presented, and its impact on system security and reliability is considered. Different implementation strategies are examined, and numerous practical examples illustrate the ease and flexibility with which such strategies can be applied in the case of either multiple- or single-line AC power transmission corridors. Finally, economic analysis quantifies the benefits of asymmetric operation.
