William Sydney Porter est né à Greensboro, Caroline du Nord. Son père, Algernon Sidney Porter, était médecin. Il est orphelin de mère dès l'âge de trois ans et est élevé par sa grand-mère paternelle et sa tante. William est un lecteur avide mais quitte l'école à l'âge de 15 ans.
Il s'installe au Texas et fait toutes sortes de petits boulots, dont pharmacien, journaliste et employé de banque. Après avoir déménagé à Austin, Texas, il se marie en 1882. En 1884 il commence une chronique humoristique intitulée The rolling stone. Il rejoint ensuite le Houston Post où il est reporter et chroniqueur. En 1887, il est accusé de détournement d'argent par la banque où il travaille.
O. Henry est relâché à Columbus, Ohio le 24 juillet 1901, après trois ans de prison. Il s'installe alors à New York et commence une carrière d'écrivain. Et c'est en prison qu'il aurait reçu son surnom.
La plupart de ses histoires se déroulent au début du XXe siècle, période contemporaine de l'auteur.
Les O. Henry Awards sont des prix donnés chaque année depuis 1919 aux États-Unis, venant récompenser les meilleures nouvelles.

Rieducazione con scasso è un racconto breve pubblicato per la prima volte sul giornale Cosmopolitan nel 1903. Describe il rientro in società del giovani rapinatore Jimmy Valentine. Nel 1910 il drammaturgo Paul Armstrong riadattò la storia in uno spettacolo teatrale di grande successo a Broadway, intitolato Aliam Jimmy Valentine, successivamente trasformato in 3 diversi film nel 1915, 1920 e 1928. Il protagonista è ispirato all'incidente descritto ne I Miserabili di Hugo. La storia fu inoltre adattata in una radio serie nel 1938.
